ETHIPIOA V: PEOPLE OF THE LAND
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shot in Afto, in Shashogo Woreda, SNNPR, Ethiopia.
I have never been to a country which so many so photogenic people. This is one of the day laborers that help build the extension of the well I documented down there. I had the opportunity to exchange a few words with her (via a translator) and she told me a bit about her life and how the well has changed it for the better:
Before she had to be on the road for eight hours to fetch water for her parents and herself. It was exhausting, dangerous, and the water was expensive and unclean.
With the Afto well she has clean water within 15 minute reach. It costs about 10% of the other well, the water is clean and she has effectively safed 7.5 hours on the road every day. She makes good use of this time, working as a day laborer and visiting school.
Her story is not an isolated case, I have heard dozens of similar ones while I was in Afto.
I was surprised what big a difference a single well can make (well, actually there are two

).
